Recognizing the Signs of Stroke: Why Every Second Counts

Senior man experiencing dizziness as a possible stroke symptom

Living in a place as vibrant as San Jose, CA, means there is always something to do. But to keep enjoying everything the Bay Area has to offer, you have to be the expert on your own body. At San Jose Pacific Neurology Center, Dr. Raj Gupta, Dr. Akshay Shah, and Prachi Dalal, NP, want to talk about something that can change a life in an instant: a stroke.

Every minute your brain doesn't get the oxygen it needs, it can lose millions of nerve cells. The good news? Knowing what to look for can literally save a life (maybe even your own).

The "B.E. F.A.S.T." Cheat Sheet

When a stroke happens, your body doesn't usually scream in pain. Instead, it sends quiet but very weird signals. To make it easy to remember, we use the acronym B.E. F.A.S.T.:

  • B - Balance: Is the person suddenly dizzy or having trouble walking?
  • E - Eyes: Is there a sudden change in vision? Double vision or loss of sight in one eye is a big red flag.
  • F - Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of their face droop?
  • A - Arms: Ask them to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • S - Speech: Are they slurring their words, or do they sound "jumbled"? Can they repeat a simple sentence back to you?
  • T - Time: If you see any of these signs, it is time to call 911 immediately.

Why You Shouldn't Play the "Wait and See" Game

Nobody likes a trip to the ER. You might rationalize delaying by thinking, "Maybe I just slept funny," or "I'll just take a nap and see if I feel better." But here’s the professional truth: Modern medicine has some incredible tools to stop a stroke in its tracks, but they only work if they’re used within a very short window of time. If you wait until the next morning, that window might be closed. Calling 911 right away gives the hospital team the head start they need to protect your brain.
